Naju, promoted to the city status in 1981, is neighboring with Hwasun to the east, Hampyeong and Muan to the west, Youngam to the south, and Gwangju to the north. It is divided into 1 town, 12 subcounties, and 6 dongs, and has a population of 98,770 with 40,898 households as of Dec., 2005. Naju is 28km long east to west and 32km long north to south. Naju which is located on the southwestern part of Korean peninsula has a land area equal to 604 square kilometers, taking up 5.00% of the total land surface area of the South Jeolla Province.
Yeoungsan River, the 4th longest in Korea, passes through the central region from north to south, and the tributaries of the rivers flow into the region creating a small floodplain. The fertility of soil around the basin is productive and the farming industry is notably developed. Mr. Geumseong is standing at the center of city, and overlooking the city.
The average annual temperature is around 13.6¡ÆC, while the average temperature during the month of January is around 0.0¡ÆC below zero and that during the month of August is around 26.1¡ÆC. The difference over the year is 26¡ÆC. The rainfall of Naju is year average approximately 1,289.6mm with half of this falling in between July and September.
Naju, which is 26.7 km south away from Gwangju, is a transportation hub with the well-developed road networks and railways to stretch out in every direction.
In December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Naju was 5,909 and the employees numbered 24,626. It has advanced food-related industry and chemical industry. In 2006 alone, Naju¡¯s trade volume reached US$115 Million, with US$30Million, in export, and US$85Mil in import.
Also, Naju is the home of the world-renowned Naju Pear, which is grown under many sunny days and fertile soil. It features with high sugar content, juicy, soft freshness, and good taste which is beloved by all the people, home and abroad, as the best pear in the world. |
