Yeonggwang, located at the northwestern region of the South Jeolla Province, is adjoining with Jangseong to the west, Hampyeong and Muan to the south, Gochang in the North Cholla Province to the north, Yellow Sea to the to the west. The county takes up 3.91% of the total land surface area of the South Jeolla Province with an area of 472.9§´, which mainly consists of 45.7% of forestland and 38.4% of farmland. Geographically, it features mountain region on the east, flat field on the west, and Ria coast. Especially, the Ria type coast has severely curved places where reclaimed lands are well developed. Along the coast of the sea there are a total of 11 inhabited, and 51 uninhabited islands. As of Dec., 2006, it has a population of 60,269 with 24,991 households and is divided into 3 towns and 7 subcounties.
Influenced by the coastal climate, Yeonggwang¡¯s climate is the mildest region in Korea and the climate is suitable for human activities. The year average temperature of Yeonggwang is 13.5¨¬C. The rainfall of Yeonggwang is year average approximately 1002.7mm with half of this falling in between July and September.

In December, 2005, 4,054 companies were operating in Yeonggwang, where 16,224 workers were employed. Traditionally, Yeonggwang has a reputation as the abundant farming and marine products including rice, barley, and laver. Among them, Gulbi, or dried croaker had been presented at a king's table, and became a special delicacy in the royal palace since the Goryo dynasty.

Yeonggwang has been known as a generous town with beautiful scenery and abundant natural resources. Yeonggwang has been also called ¡°Yeonggwang of Opulence¡± in the ancient times because its extensive field is spread throughout Yeonggwang.

In particular, Yeonggwang has Gamami Beach, flourishing, old pine trees along the Chilsan Sea, bountiful natural resources, the white-pebbled Songido Beach, Seagull Island in Chilsan-Do, fantastic rocks and stones around Anma Islands, the sightseeing road along the Baeksu coastline, and a number of cultural relics, including Bulgapsa (temple), the symbol of its Buddhist cultural heritage during the Baekje dynasty.
